Modifier keys for aiming speed
Reported by riot | November 18th, 2008 @ 10:19 PM
As mentioned elsewhere, the turret traversal speed is shockingly slow - but speeding it up would reduce aiming precision. I suggest a modifier key, such as shift, to make the turret controls say 10x faster while it's held. Similarly you could add a modifier like ctrl to make them slower, for extra aiming precision.

Personally I like the aiming to be painfully slow, adds another level of tactics to the game where you can fly over people to "flank" them. If it's left slow it does need to have checks serverside to make sure people aren't changing the client side aiming speed though (which would be very easy to do currently). Any other opinions on this?

I more or less agree with John, I think the slowness of the turret adds a certain level of tactical immersion to the gameplay. If it was too easy to aim you'd have to make tanks quicker and dodgeier (or the rounds would be rediculously short), in which they may as well not be tanks. That might be fun, but it'd have to be a different game mode altogether.
On the other hand, with respect to this, I like the idea of a modifier key (say keypad 0) to change the mode of firing strength, so that the strength of the shot is determined by how long the space bar is held down for.

Well presently my main gripe with slow aiming speed is the unbalance - some people start pointing directly at others, etc. But this would no longer be a problem if the two tickets (reset aiming arrows and flatten ground under tanks at spawn) were addressed, as everyone would at least start aimed straight up, and could each pick their initial targets with equal ease/difficulty.

I don't think a worms style "hold space to power shot" would really work. People using it would be at a big disadvantage in two ways: 1) they wouldn't be able to fire immediately when the gun is ready and 2) they wouldn't easily be able to fire a shot, watch it and make small adjustments to power to follow up.

Yeah, good points there riot, those two tickets should be a reasonably high priority.
